WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN PALACIOS?

Things to do

 Fishing:
Palacios has 2 400’ lighted fishing piers, allowing fishing all day and night.  There are also small individual areas along the bayshore.
If you have your own boat, you have 3 boat ramps to choose from, and a large bay with good fishing (Tres Palacios which becomes part of the famous
Matagorda Bay).
If you don’t have your own boat, fishing guides are available, or you can rent kayaks and canoes.
Although you can’t just hop on board a shrimp boat, it is an enjoyable site to drive around the harbor and look at all of these boats.  Palacios has about 450 shrimp boats that call Palacios their home.  That is the largest fleet on the
Texas coast.

 Birding
The Palacios area has numerous sites that are on the Coastal
Bend Birding Map.  This area has also had the highest number of species in the Christmas Bird count for the last 6 years.  Many shore birds can be seen here, with the Brown Pelicans here year round.  White Pelicans can be seen in the winter time, as can Sandhill Cranes, Geese and numerous Hawks.

Shopping
Palacios has numerous stores and shops for your shopping needs.

Eating
Numerous restaurants are available, ranging from Steaks, Seafood and Mexican Food to Fast Foods.  (See attached list)

Exercise
Palacios has a 1 ½ mile seawall along the bayfront for those who enjoy walking.
Although the bike & hike trail has not yet been completed, it should be a reality before too long. However, most Palacios streets do not have a lot of traffic, so there are plenty of places to ride a bike.  Don’t look for any hills to climb on your mountain bike.  Palacios is pretty flat!

History
There are approximately 13 National Historic Markers around town to look at.
Our museum just recently opened their LaSalle Exhibition. The museum is being renovated, so the building across the street (on Commerce) is housing the exhibit.  Palacios had a large part in the exaction of LaSalle’s ship, LaBelle,  and they are also a part of the seven county LaSalle Odyssey Trail.
We are also on the Texas Independence Trail and are part of the
Texas Settlement Region, so history is long standing in this area.

Relaxation
With a population of 5000, this town is a little slower moving than our big cities in the area, so one of the draws is to just come down, grab a good book and just relax.  There is a small beach for those who want to ‘grab a few rays’ while they relax, or you can sit on the porch of the many vacation houses, b&b’s or our historic Luther Hotel.

Visit
If you want to know a little more about the town and want to meet some great people, just walk around the town and spend a little time getting to know the locals.  They’re really a great bunch of folks.
